Where to go walking and cycling

There’s nothing better than getting out and about on foot or by bicycle, and within just a short distance of Lime Tree Holiday Park is a huge variety of farm walks, public footpaths and family friendly routes to go walking and cycling.

Lime Tree Holiday Park Walking Cycling

Lime Tree Holiday Park is itself surrounded by farms and fields including a farm walk  of 20-25 minutes which is great for dogs. The walk takes you through the camping fields to the wood at the top of the hill and back down on the public footpath through the farm and its Butcher’s Shop where you can purchase great BBQ packs or some delicious bacon for breakfast, before making your way back. Walking and cycling options include:

  • Walk to Buxton town centre (20-25 minutes)
  • Lime Tree Park: Farm walk (20-25 minutes)
  • Solomon’s Temple walk (45 minutes)
  • Peak District trails (Monsal, Tissington, White Peak etc)
  • Reservoir walks (Tittesworth, Carsington, Upper Derwent Valley)

Walk to Buxton town centre

We are surrounded by farms and fields and also the closest park to Buxton town centre with walks taking 20-25 minutes. A taxi back from town costs £4.50 with our fixed rate.

  • Option 1 – Public footpath (popular for hardy and tough walkers): Opposite our entrance there is a public footpath over the fields which follows the path to Dale Road, Buxton Town (this can be wet so take your walking boots!)
  • Option 2 – Turn left (popular for most walkers wanting dry footwear): Turn left out of our entrance and under the beautiful viaduct. At the end of the road turn right along London Road to the town centre. You will pass the minor injuries hospital and pass Tesco Express both on your right hand side. Go straight over the big traffic lights and onto High Street which leads past The Cheshire Cheese/ The Sun Inn pubs (both dog friendly) and into the market place.
  • Option 3 – Turn right (popular for those wanting to get to Morrison’s supermarket, Weatherspoons and The Railway Pub which are both dog friendly): Turn right out of our entrance and then at the end of the road you will see Morrisons supermarket, Morrisons Cafe petrol station and cashpoint. Go straight at the roundabout on the A6 Bakewell Road towards Buxton town centre. At the next roundabout you can turn right and reach Wetherspoons pub, The Wye Bridge House or turn left and under the bridge is The Railway Pub, Iceland, Waitrose, Marks & Spencer etc.

White Peak trails and cycle routes

Discover over 70 miles of relaxing cycling and walking in the countryside. There’s plenty of choice of routes to cycle whether you’re planning a short ride for an hour or so, or you would like a longer outing:

  • The High Peak Trail is 171⁄2 miles long between Dowlow (at the Buxton end – just 6 miles short of the town) and High Peak Junction (close to Cromford).
  • The Tissington Trail joins the High Peak Trail at Parsley Hay (SK17 ODG, 8 miles or 12 mins from Lime Tree) and runs 13 miles south to Ashbourne.
  • Route 54 joins Middleton Top to Tissington via about 10 miles of country roads. There is an additional route around Carsington Water of about 8 miles.
  • The Manifold Track is a 9 mile tarmac track along a disused railway from Hulme End to Waterhouses. A section between Swainsley and Wetton Mill is used by traffic (single track) and contains a tunnel 100m long at Swainsley. This is illuminated but still quite dark with small passing places to avoid vehicles.

Tissington Trail and High Peak Trail

Routes such as the Tissington Trail and High Peak Trail start only a few miles to the south of Buxton at Parsley Hay (SK17 ODG, 8 miles or 12 minutes away from Lime Tree opposite the junction of the Youlgreave road with the A515), and offer excellent traffic-free cross-country routes which pass close to many pretty villages.

The Sett Valley Trail, Dark Peak

A trail for all with breathtaking views of the Dark Peak. The Sett Valley Trail is a 2.5 mile recreational trail for walkers, cyclists and horse riders linking New Mills and Hayfield. It follows a former railway line through outstanding countryside and forms part of the Pennine Bridleway National Trail between Hayfield and Birch Vale. It is mostly fairly level cycling with some nice views, though much of the area is quite built-up.

Upper Derwent Valley

Further north, the Upper Derwent Valley is a popular venue for cyclists. A simple route from the Fairholmes centre up the valley following the small road alongside the reservoirs, this is a pleasant ride – especially on Sundays when most traffic is banned. A circuit of the reservoirs is also a fine excursion.

Carsington Reservoir

In the south of the region, the area around Carsington Reservoir offers good opportunities for cycle rides. There is a marked-out trail around the reservoir that follows a mixture of cycle ways and small roads. This is a 2 mile-long reservoir, managed by Severn Trent Water. Cyclists can make a complete circuit of the reservoir – over 8 miles long – crossing the dam and passing through the villages of Carsington and Hopton. There are wildlife viewing points around the shore. A large modern Visitor Centre includes a children’s play area, watersports centre, restaurant and shops.

Tittesworth Water

Tittesworth Water occupies a beautiful setting with The Roaches as its breathtaking backdrop with plenty of activities, walks, visitor centre and restaurant.
